    “Walk with a Doc” Program
My name is Sharon Dinse.  I am a RN and a CDE (Certified Diabetes Educator).  Prior to becoming a nurse, I was a Health and Physical Education teacher.  I have started an advocacy group called GOHI (Get Outside for a Healthy Inside).  The group is diverse with nurses, a doctor, two school principals, an artist, school teachers, a lawyer, an AFL-CIO/United Way liaison, and some community activists.  We are proud that the Saginaw Community Foundation is our fiscal sponsor.

Our mission is to increase opportunities for physical activity for all Saginaw residents including mentally or physically handicapped adults and children.  The City of Saginaw does not maintain neighborhood parks.  It is not that city officials don’t care, they don’t have enough money.  GOHI hopes to raise enough money, through grants and fundraisers, to revitalize and/or create new and innovative parks within the city.  In the meantime, we will be offering activities that provide more opportunities for physical activity.  The first such activity is “Walk With a Doc.”

We were recently accepted as a new chapter of "Walk With a Doc," a program started by a cardiologist in Ohio in which citizens and doctors walk together, allowing them to interact without the constraints of an office visit, while also getting physical activity (please refer to the website
http://walkwithadoc.org/ for more information).  We plan to hold our walks on Saturday mornings at Ojibway Island or Hoyt Park.  Prior to the walk, a local doctor gives a brief presentation (about 10 minutes), then walks with the group for about an hour.  The doctor is able to take questions from the group during the presentation or when walking.  The number of Saturdays per month will depend on how many physicians volunteer.  Please call or email me to volunteer or get more information.  We would love to see Saginaw physicians out walking with  community members.  If you promote "Walk With a Doc" in your office, maybe you could walk with some of your patients.

Thanks for your consideration, I look forward to hearing from you.  Sharon Dinse, RN, MA, CDE w 989-284-3409 w gohisaginaw@gmail.com.
